He began his career practicing emergency medicine. During those 15 years, he wrestled with the disconnect between his training as an osteopathic physician, where a comprehensive approach is taken with each patient, and traditional medicine, which treats symptoms but seldom addresses the underlying cause. While merely treating symptoms is effective in emergencies, this approach is not effective for chronic medical problems. For example, high blood pressure medication only treats the symptoms of elevated blood pressure. A more holistic approach addresses nutritional status, weight, stress reduction, overconsumption of stimulants, proper rest and sleep patterns, family history, and diet.
